In December 2018, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidelines on the assessment and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These guidelines, the product of an independent committee of professionals and lay members who reviewed the latest evidence, update the original 2005 guidelines in a number of important respects. It was reviewed in August 2024.
They offer new recommendations on the coordination of care, more detailed consideration of the needs of children and young people, and care for people with PTSD and complex needs, as well as more general updates.
The guidelines aim to improve quality of life by reducing symptoms of PTSD such as anxiety, sleep problems and difficulties with concentration. Full details can be found on the NICE website (NG116).
